The thing that separates a triple changer from normal transformers is that they have a t-cog that allows them to have three forms, along with being able to transform 3 times as fast as a regular transformer.
The first few triple changer transformers introduced are Blitzwing, Springer, Astro Train, Broadside, Sandstorm, and Octane. Later, there are more transformers added, including, Megatron, Anti Blaze, Checkpoint, Scythe, Laserbeak, Drift, Mixmaster, Drag Strip, and Backfire. In the Bumblebee movie, we were shown two more triple changers known as Shatter and Dropkick.
The reason triple changer transformers came to be is because the Decepticons were on a quest to develop greater machines of war with two distinct alternate modes. They have the ability to travel by land and air. These transformers are able to do this with ease, being able to rapidly change in order to confuse and outsmart their enemies.
