Mean girls the musical
First half of play:
This musical starts off with two people, one girl and boy, known as Janis and Damian. They begin by introducing what happens to their friend whose name is Cady. After the first introduction, the setting changes to Africa where we meet Cady herself, and we find out her and her family have to move back to the U.S. Soon after moving, she starts high school, and she thinks it’s going to be a rough year since she’s never been to an American school. Cady gets to meet Damian and Janis who tell her the run down of the school. We then meet The Mean Girls, named Karen, Gretchen, and Regina. They Mean Girls noticed Cady sitting with Janis and Damian at another table and invited her over to sit with them at lunch. Cady, Damian, and Janis all agree that she can use this as an opportunity to spy on The Mean Girls.
Later, in math class, Cady meets a boy that sits in front of her whose name is Aaron Samuels. She immediately falls in love with him and is nervous to speak to him.
After school, Cady and the Mean Girls are going to the mall. Cady gets told by Gretchn that Aaron is off limits for her, Because he is Regina’s ex, and it’s girl code to not date another Mean Girl’s ex.
The Mean Girls all end up going to Regina’s house, and the girls find the Burn Book, which was filled with the things Regina doesn’t like about everyone in school. Cady goes home. She goes to school and informed Damine and Janis about her going to the mall and Regina’s house. She brings a Kalteen bar to school and They want to give it to Regina. She only wants to eat lunch with them and not mess with her life. It gose to AP calculus and he says that he felt like a tool. She pretends to be dumb to get a boys attention. He invites Cady to a Halloween party. She gets told about Cady liking The guy and Regina makes Cady jealous. She runs to Janis and Damian, they tell the story of what actually happened with Janis and Regina. They decide to get back at Regina. They give her Kalteen bars. She makes Cady jealous, so she caves with Damian and Janis. They make Grechen jealous so she starts spilling secrets. She says that Regina is cheating on Aaron. Cady tells Aaron. There is a talent show for Christmas, they mess up and the power of the internet happened. Regina can’t sit with Cady, Grechen, and Karen. Cady has changed a lot, she’s more popular and she dresses like Regina. Grechen and Karen are free from Regina.
Opinions about the first half?
I liked it a lot. It set the tone in a good way. My favorite part is when Cady realized that Regina is evil and her defending Karen and Grechen.
Second Half of the Play:
Cady gets nominated for Spring Fling Queen, but she’s still worried about Aaron. She tells Janis she “can’t” come to her art show because of a “thing,” but really, she’s just caught up in the drama and obsessed with her phone. Cady, Gretchen, and Karen start planning a party, and she lies to her family to get out of their plans so she can throw it.
Cady convinces Aaron to come to the party, but things start going downhill. Aaron finds out that she lied about the Kalteen bars, and Cady starts drinking at the party. Everyone’s there, and when she finally talks to Aaron, she tells him she pretended to need help in math. He tells her he liked her better before—when she was just the new girl, not trying so hard to fit in.
Cady chases after Aaron, but then Janis shows up. They argue, and Cady quotes Regina, saying, “It’s not my fault you’re in love with me or something.” Janis freaks out, and it turns into a full-blown fight.
Meanwhile, Regina is ready to get revenge. She prints out the pages of the Burn Book and spreads them all over the school, blaming it all on Cady. Total chaos breaks out—everyone goes savage. The principal brings all the girls into the gym to calm things down and figure out what happened.
After that, Regina storms out of the school, and Cady follows her. They’re arguing outside when out of nowhere—boom! Regina gets hit by a bus.
Everything shifts after that. Cady starts taking responsibility—she even admits to the Burn Book so that the teacher who almost got fired doesn’t take the fall. She gets suspended from school and isn’t allowed to go to the Spring Fling.
During that time, she joins the mathletes and competes with them in a tournament—they end up winning! Then Spring Fling rolls around, and even though she’s not supposed to go, Cady shows up. She wants to find Janis and make things right.
She bumps into Regina, and instead of fighting, they actually forgive each other. Then Cady wins Spring Fling Queen, but instead of just taking the crown, she gets on stage and apologizes to Janis and everyone she’s hurt. She breaks the crown and shares it, showing that everyone deserves to feel special.
The message is clear: everyone can be a star.
My thoughts on the musical:
My favorite part was when Regina gets back at Cady. The song where she prints off the pages from the Burn Book was so creative and really well done. The lighting, sound, singing, choreography, and costumes were all amazing. It felt really modern, especially since it’s set in the 2000s—way more relatable than a lot of older musicals.
