The True Meaning of Valentine’s Day: as told by SpongeBob

Crystal Samuels

Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate romantic love, friendship, and admiration. Every year on February 14th, people all around the world celebrate this day by sending messages of love and affection to family, friends, and loved ones. And, what is the true meaning of Valentine’s Day?

One of the greatest examples in the history of mankind comes from season 1 episode 16 of the television show, SpongeBob SquarePants. An episode that just happened to be about Valentine’s Day. The plot circulates around SpongeBob and Sandy having prepared a very special Valentine’s day present, a chocolate balloon, for SpongeBob’s best friend, Patrick Star. There was a bit of a delay getting the gift, thus causing SpongeBob and Sandy to panic. Therefore, SpongeBob fibs and tells his best friend that his gift was actually just a sturdy handshake. Patrick becomes very upset and thinks that SpongeBob forgot to get him something for Valentine’s Day. Ultimately, the balloon arrives and Patrick eats it immediately.

So, what can we learn from this impeccable moment in television history? In the end, this day isn’t just meant for gift giving, but just like Christmas and your birthday, they all have special meanings to them. Valentine’s Day is a day when you show your appreciation of your loved ones. Gifts don’t show how much you appreciate people, that comes from the way you act and treat people.
