Capital City has a large and diverse number of clubs for students to engage in but one of the most fun in my opinion is speech and debate which Mr. Proctor runs in room 116. Speech and Debate is an excellent way for students to voice their opinions on all sorts of issues and topics and give students a great platform to speak on. I have interviewed Mr. Proctor for more information.

What is the main purpose of speech and debate?

“The main purpose of speech and debate is to give students the opportunity to have a voice and a platform to speak out about issues, problems, and topics that interest them. Speech and Debate is the rare activity that can benefit anyone and help you in whatever profession you want to pursue.”

What sort of events do you organize/participate in?

“We participate in weekend tournaments throughout the school year (Sept. – March). We travel to different schools across the state and compete for trophies and recognition.

We have ranges of Acting events (humorous, dramatic, prose and poetry readings)?

“We have speech events (radio broadcasting, Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, Student Congress), and we have debate events (Lincoln Douglas debate, Public Forum debate, Policy debate).”

What is the allure of the club/why should students join?

“Speech and Debate is a very welcoming and accepting organization that appreciates the perspectives and opinions of the younger generation. If you are passionate about Acting and want to do it professionally, Speech and Debate is for you. If you want to improve your communication skills, and become a better leader, speech and debate is for you. If you want to have fun, write speeches about what you are passionate about and want the world to know your story, speech and debate is for you.”

Is there anything else you would like to share about speech and debate club?

“We meet every Monday and Wednesday, 4pm-6pm in Room 116. If you are interested, feel free to stop by!”
