Throughout the school year, Capital City High School celebrates March Kindness Week, which officially begins next week. What is Kindness Week, you may ask? March Kindness Week is an annual event held at Capital City High School, celebrating intentional acts of kindness in schools and the community. This is all before spring break, hosted by our own Student Council. Are you excited?
Student Council holds multiple events and fundraisers throughout the week, which is quite fantastic! Starting with an annual sock drive. The sock drive is running right now and ends on March 17, where students and staff can donate 12 pairs of socks or more, and in return, they can get a catered Chick-fil-A box lunch on Wednesday. Would you like to participate?

This isn’t all just about socks! They are also hosting a Staff vs. Student Basketball game, where you can see your favorite staff member and classmates battle for the ultimate bragging rights. This is the fourth year in a row, but the first time student vs. staff. This game will benefit the Special Olympics located in Missouri where they have raised more than $9,000 for the Special Olympics in the past three years.

Not just that, but they also have a spirit week that is ready to pump up students and staff at CCHS for March Kindness Week! Starting Monday, they want everyone to “Beee Kind.” Wear your black and yellow to symbolize a bee while also being kind. Next, on Tuesday, be comfy and kind while wearing your PJs and comfy clothes. On Wednesday, you need to team up for kindness with your peers and staff wearing your jerseys! But on Thursday, you want to let everybody know “it’s cool to be kind” and wear any tropical gear that you have in your closet. This may be a cute Hawaiian shirt or even a nice, cute flower around your ear. Finally, on Friday, Capital City High School wants you to “Be a Cav. Be Kind”, wear any Cav gear that you may have!

To get hyped up for the kindness week that is coming up, I talked to the one who coordinated these events for the past three years. He shares some words with us that are unforgettable!

How did Kindness Week start?
Kindness Week started a number of years ago at CCHS. The idea was spawned from a Student Council Advisor Conference I attended. The theme is a play on college basketball’s “March Madness” and encourages students and staff to embrace all things it means to be kind!”
What is one of your favorite kindness week events?
My all-time favorite kindness week event is the annual March Kindness Braggin’ Rights Game. In the past, CC staff have taken on staff from neighboring high schools in a competitive game of basketball. The turnout for the event has gotten bigger and bigger each year and is one of the more anticipated events of the year. The best thing about the game is that it raises money for the Special Olympics of Missouri! Last year, the game raised $4,900 for the Special Olympics. This year, the event is different because it’s students vs. staff!
What are you excited about for this year?
I am excited that we had a pretty good turnout for the sock drive! We have had more than 500 pairs of socks donated so far, and they all benefit local children in Mid-Missouri through a partnership with The Sneaker Project!
What are the different organizations that CCHS has teamed up with in the past for Kindness Week?
This year, the Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy is helping Stuco host the Braggin’ Rights basketball game. They will be hosting a school supplies drive at the basketball game on Wednesday, March 18.
Anything you want to say to hype up next week for the Cavaliers?
I hope to see you at the Students vs. Staff game on Wednesday, March 18! Tip-off is at 7:30 PM. You won’t want to miss it, and come cheer on the staff to take down the students!
Capital City High School wants to highlight kindness week all next week, so come out and be kind like a cavalier should be. There are many events that every student can participate in to enjoy themselves. That could be from starting with wearing your pjs, showing how you can be comfy and kind, all the way to showing up to support the Students vs. Staff game benefiting our very own Special Olympics in Missouri! If you want to donate any socks, make sure you go to Mr. Miriani’s room, located in room 112. If you have any questions, Mr. Mirani will be happy to assist you. Cavaliers are made and meant to be kind! BE KIND A CAV BE KIND
