Group chats are buzzing. It is finally that time, Sadie season has officially arrived at Capital City High School. As of Tuesday, February 17th, students are going to enter the hallways of Capital City High School and see the high school decorated with the theme “Rio”. Capital City High School is getting all ready for Sadie’s dance this week with the dance being on February 21st.
Sadie Hawkins dances originated in the late 1930s, and by the late 1940s, high schools began hosting them, which are now commonly referred to as simply “Sadies”. What makes Sadies different from prom and homecoming is that Sadies is a dance where girls take the initiative to ask their dates to be their plus one for the dance. This is the reverse of the traditional gender roles. Not just that, but Sadie’s is also known to be more of a fun and casual school dance.
As Capital City High School is getting ready for Sadie’s this week, they have a spirit week with a theme of Rio chosen by students, which is quite magnificent. Tuesday it is “Lost in the Wild (wear your camo gear), Wednesday is “Beach Vibes” wear your tropical gear, Thursday is “Jersey Jungles” wear animal print or fav jersey, and Friday is “Rio Carnival” Freshman wear your green, sophomores wear your yellow, juniors wear your pink, and seniors wear your blue, staff wear any type of neon.

Sadie Week is also going to be celebrated through fun events that students and staff can enjoy. Monday at 7 pm, there is a power buff volleyball, Tuesday night is the basketball game vs. Helias, which is going to be fun for students to show up and show out. Friday morning is the big assembly where the band is going to be playing, cheerleaders are going to be dancing, and students are looking forward to seeing Sadie’s court, along with the student pick queen and king. Now, Friday night, you have your big rivalry game against JC. Every student needs to be there to show up with a Cavalier spirit. Lastly, Saturday night 8-10 pm we have Sadie’s dance.
These are what some students from Capital City High School are saying about Sadie’s week.
Alani Towne, a sophomore at Capital City High School says “I think it’s interesting. I’ve never been to one personally, but I imagine it is a great opportunity for maybe a girl to ask the guy that she really likes out especially if she thinks that he likes her back.”
Mark Pierce, a junior at Capital City High School says “I don’t know anything about Sadies at all sadly.”
David Estradagomez, a sophomore at Capital City High School says, “Sadies is pretty cool and pretty chill. I personally never went. It looks really fun.”
This week is going to be a week to remember for some students. Don’t forget to dress up for the spirit dress days, and also show up and show out for the competition and spirit this week. Tickets are being sold in the cafeteria for all lunches right before the dance. The theme is Rio, and I am excited to see the spirit within this whole entire week between the staff and students. Let’s go, Cavaliers.
